Welcoming the dark
Flee or face?
Greetings
Autumn leaves are falling down
Surely flows the river
Yellow and red and golden brown
Dance in sun soft shimmer
Autumn sweeps through. The winds, rain and low lying sunlight take hold. Crisp air nibbles our cheeks and we begin to dig out our woollens and warm socks ready for the fading warmth and beckoning cold.
The darker seasons are upon us.
Do you embrace them?
Do you welcome the beckoning dark
As a wisened old friend?
Or do you chase the light,
Never turning inwards?
Is there fear of what
May awaken in this
Season of dreaming?
What would happen were the dark to guide you?
We live in a culture that disowns the healthy power of darkness. Dominant modern culture oppresses all things black: from people to places. Over thousands of years, attitudes toward the dark have seeped into our collective consciousness and imbued how we live and relate to all we cannot see.
Yet longing and isolation grows within us. Longing for an intimacy we know yet turn away from.
We have come to fear the answer. To grasp for eternal light so wildly we are blinded by it.
Perhaps it is not more light we truly seek. Perhaps we need to remember to see in the dark.
Begin slowly,
Ease in.
Switch out the lights.
See within.
